More About This Experience
Weaving is one of Lao's most traditional skills that is practised by Lao women, and almost all Lao women can weave. Lao weavers are known for producing intricate fabric in Home-spun silk and cotton most notably. there are a lot of types of weaving in Laos and some of the best silk weaving would be of the Tai Daeng and Tai Dum ethnic group - both from the Northern Laos.
There is still a widely held belief in the villages that the better at weaving a lady is, the better a wife she would make! That is also a key reason why most Lao women can weave. The level of skill is judged by the sophistication of the patterns within, and you can choose your own difficulty level when you try it out! Plain weaving is pretty simple and while the weaving loom looks monstrously complex, you'll get the hang of it within 10minutes!
Options:
You can choose to weave a 70cm mini soft cotton scarf with a simple pattern or just add $5 for a massive 170cm scarf.
Note: Your instructor will let you choose a range of patterns to weave. If you are unable to finish in 5 hours, your host will complete it on your behalf and send it to your guest house within 1 day. If you would like more difficult patterns than the ones presented to you, you can purchase the full day add-on as it takes significantly more time.
The basic price includes is the weaving of soft cotton scarves you see at the night market. For Silk scarves, please select the silk add-on.
