More About This Experience

Wood carving is one of Lao's greatest skills, dating back to pre-Angkorian eras where craftsmen here turned all forms of wood into beautiful sculptures and frescoes that adorned the temples of the Angkor empire and subsequently many of the Wats as Buddhism spread throughout the region. Blessed with a diversity in the types of trees, wood carvers could perfect their skill and create various sculptures using different materials. Today, wood carving is a slowly dying trade, kept alive by the temples which periodically order statues of Buddhas. A select few hotels also make it a point to custom make wooden signages and logos hand-made by the local wood carvers. There is however little economic sustainability locally and a greater appreciation of the craft would help its revival globally not only as an art form but as a key ingredient of sustainable products. This exclusive experience is run by a master wood carver who used to carve pieces at the palace for the royal family and often points to a plethora of works at the National museum which is also the ground of the former palace. Don't miss this experience! This course is over 4 hours so you might want to bring a snack and some water in case you get hungry :) There's also a nice restaurant nearby should you need to buy anything. *If you are unable to finish your carving in 5 hours, you can ask your host to finish it for you and it will be delivered to your hotel in the next 1-2 days. If you'd like to completely finish your carving on your own, it is a great challenge to do it in half a day! So you might want to select the full day workshop add-on (Only available at 9am). Please note: - Sunglasses - Mosquito cream
