More About This Experience
One of UNESCO’s World Heritage Sites, the many villages of Luang Prabang is filled with beautiful architecture that has been developed over several centuries.
What better way to discover the City than a tour with Backstreet Academy?
In this 2 hour tour, we will guide you through many of Luang Prabang’s buildings and introduce you to their local markets, food, as well as families who have lived in the City for many years.
On our first stop, we will take you through the Lao Morning Market and show you first hand how the locals do their ‘marketing.” Also introducing you to some items you don’t usually find in more traditional markets, such as; snakes, insects, birds, rats, beeswax, as well as the usual countryside vegetables and herbs. During the Market Tour is where we will also find our breakfast and eat like the locals do!
After breakfast, we will continue walking the City to discover hundred year old temples; buildings that were created during the French Colonial period; and have a chat with a Family who has lived in Luang Prabang for decades.
Finally, as our tour comes to a close, we will introduce you to an English Conversation Center where local Laotian students gather to practice their English skills with travelers.
The following are the items you will be able to sample during breakfast:
Lao Coconut Pancakes: Locally called Khaonom Krok, it's one of Luang Prabang’s favorite street food. Generally served after a Laotian dinner, this traditional bite is both light and incredibly yummy! They are made from sticky rice powder and coconut milk.
Khao Soi: This is a Laotian soup made with flat rice noodles or occasionally with round noodles. The soup is made up of chopped pork, tomatoes, fermented soy beans, chilies, shallots and garlic.
Sai Oua: One of Laos’ most traditional foods, best eaten with sticky rice! In the past there was no refrigeration, so this is how we kept meat to eat all year round. Sai Oua or Lao sausage is made from chopped fatty pork with galangal, lime leaves, shallots, lemongrass, garlic, salt and fish sauce.
Fried egg with pork: A very common dish eaten at home and especially in the countryside where bamboo shoots are easy to find.
