We did two tours with Backstreet Academy - the Hmong Cooking Class and Hmong Batik Workshop. Both were excellent! For the cooking class an interpreter came with us and picked us up from the hotel with a tuk tuk. The family were lovely and the food was delicious - who knew you could eat rattan?! The batik was great fun too and an awesome way to get a meaningful souvenir. :)
This was such a wonderful artistic experience leanring to make traditional batik cloth. I worked for about 2 hours to create the patterns and designs for the cloth.
I took an all-day batik class at this gorgeous living arts center overlooking the Mekong River. There was no one else signed up, so I had a private lesson with a wonderful Hmong woman, along with a translator. The center also offers weaving and dying classes, some of them half-day. You get lunch with the full-day courses, and the food was very, very good. The center itself is gorgeous - the grounds are beautiful, and the buildings are well designed. I met some women from the half-day weaving class, and the pieces they'd made were really stunning. They provide transportation from and back to one of their two shops in the main part of town. It was such a great way to spend a day in a new country, and it's set up so that you easily meet other people taking other classes. I highly recommend it!
We did the batik workshop as a birthday present from my mum. First we had a lovely lunch overlooking the mekong, and then spent a half day learning about how to do traditional hmong batik. This was an incredible experience. It was a lovely afternoon attempting to create a detailed design, with our instructor being a lovely expert who had lots of patience overtime we went wrong. And at the end we have a beautiful piece each which we will frame now we are home. And as it was my birthday the friendly staff all came and said happy birthday, and then sang me happy birthday and gave me chocolate! An excellent birthday and an excellent afternoon. Thank you so much.
