More About This Experience

It is customary for Nepali men to wear Dhaka topis on special occasions and if you're in the countryside then it's something of a common fare and almost all men will proudly wear them. In fact, the top echelons of Nepali political leaders will never be seen without them. Although similar to hats worn across other cultures in Southeast Asia, what makes the Nepali Dhaka topi special is the cloth from which it is woven and also where it gets the name, Dhaka. At first glance the patterns will all look the same but on closer examination you will notice the intricacies of the design and colour palettes on every hat. It may appear simple to make this, and the initial stages of the workshop is straightforward where you will simply be cutting and sewing the Dhaka cloth. However, the signature shape of the Dhaka topi is where the workshop starts to get a bit trickier - a wrong angle and you could end up with a cube-shaped hat. Fret not though, our host Bina will be there with you every step of the way and will guide you through. :) This is a simple yet perhaps culturally the most significant souvenir you can buy in Nepal. Please note that if you have selected an add on for pick up then we use local taxis.
