More About This Experience

The humble and versatile Bamboo has always played an integral role in Vietnamese culture. The Bamboo is used for anything from building housing, cooking as an ingredient and even for handicrafts which are ultimately used for decorative purposes. Our host for this course, Huynh Phuong Do, is one artist who has taken the roots of the bamboo and used his wood carving skills to give it a unique twist incorporating the little hair-like shoots that accompany the roots of a Bamboo. What could easily have been discarded as waste, he has turned into either the hair or beard of the bust that he carves on the main stump of the root. In this course, Hunyh will already have washed and dried the bamboo before your arrival so you don't need to worry about that. You will start with a short practice session that will give you a feel of the bamboo and the chisels you will be working with. Once you've gotten your rhythm in, it's on to clamping your bamboo and carving. While you might seem a little blank in the beginning, listen to Huynh's instructions and you will see in no time how the shape gradually starts to appear. Hammering away on the chisel can be tiring so feel free to take short breaks in between the course. The finer details like the eyes and edges of the nose are best left Huynh to finish, but if you're confident enough then have a go at it. Once the main chiseling is done, all you're left with is sandpapering. And there you have it, your own bamboo root carved bust! :)

One of the best experiences we've had in vietnam! Everything was set and organized as we came. The host is so sweet, kept smiling and laughing with us. He is definitely a professional. He had a lot of patience to show us exactly what we needed to do step by step. Since he doesn't speak english well enough his brother was there and did a wonderful job with translation. Making our own bamboo roots craving was awesome. We are very happy we got the chance to support a really great local family business and also have a unique memory from our trip. Thanks for everything, Shay and Yuval from Israel.

This was a fantastic activity. Troung our guide picked us up from a designated pick up location. He took us to the host's location who then started the activity. He had already set up the workshop and first asked us to choose what we wanted to carve. The host was patient with our lack of skills and strength but made us feel comfortable and took over parts where he thought was difficult (which was really helpful). The guide was also very nice and did a fantastic job of translating the entire experience. Lots of fun and laughter were had during the activity and while we are as bad as we were in the craft of carving, the experience itself was great and we now have two wonderfully made crafts. They will make a great piece. Highly recommend. Go even if you're not that into carving, its a nice way to spend an afternoon and do something different while interacting with the host and guide. Thanks backstreet. Hilda and Martin

Such a creative craft! I was not only impressed with the level of craftsmanship but also the creative spirit among the local artisans in Hoi An, and possibly the rest of Vietnam. Before starting to carve, I was asked to choose a face to carve from the many that were displayed in the workshop, all quite jolly looking faces of old men. It was fun to look through them together with the host who was amused that I was amused looking at the faces. From thereon, we went ahead with the carving. The host showed how to first achieve the basic contours (which was fairly easy), we then went on to get the specific features of the face which while took meticulous detailing, the end result was fantastic. Sand papering the sculpture in the end was a nice way to spend time to talk to the host as it did not involve much paying attention to. All in all, I really enjoyed the few hours I spent in Phuong's workshop. Such a different way to experience a place.

I was in the start impressed with the sculpture of the bamboo root and very interested in creating my own bamboo sculpture. I have done woodworking craft when I was young, so I was interested, but it seems to be more difficult than what I expected. The host is very professional and trained very well, the instructions are good with safety in mind always and he will also help if you are having difficulty. In the final product was very good and I am happy with the end result. Backstreet Academy is doing great work supporting locals like my host. Please come and join their activity.
